Good question. I've learned passes both from the videos and from workshops and have a few observations. First of all, an effective or 'proper' state to me is simply one of watching and repeating the movements with a desire to learn. Giving a movement 'heart' is entirely up to you, whether at a workshop or watching a video.

On the videos the basic mood is set by the demonstrators and the explanations given, which are dry and no nonsense, almost to the point of being funny. What makes them useful tools in learning passes is that you see three different people doing them, you see them being done from different angles, and key aspects of doing them are pointed out. Also, the people presenting the passes have been practicing for over ten years and teach the passes at workshops.

The difference in learning passes at workshops can be summed up with one word: MASS. With several hundred people in a room, and the demonstrators in twos on four platforms spaced out in a large area, you often don't get any where near the view that you do on the video tapes. But you get a massive movement, a consensus of movement, a combined energy that allows one to learn very quickly.

I've experienced some outrageous energetic states at workshops, but at the end of the day you're left with yourself, just like you are with the video tapes, and what matters is continued practice. I have not experienced a continuous series of highs, but rather a few extraordinary points here and there separated by a lot of work and nothing much seeming to go on.

The point, as I see it now, is to acheive a kind of spontaneous integration of the passes for use when and how one sees fit in every day life. They're a method of avoiding energetic stasis, of keeping energy circulating, of sustaining well being, vigilance, and a sense of awe.
